Hantavirus Outbreak Spreads Beyond Ship
A recent cruise ship outbreak of hantavirus has taken a concerning turn as one of the four Canadian passengers who returned home has received a presumptive positive test result for the virus. According to Dr. Bonnie Henry, the public health officer for British Columbia, the results from the National Microbiology Lab in Winnipeg are expected to confirm the case over the weekend.
Current Status of Infected Passengers
The individual, who is part of a couple in their 70s, began displaying mild symptoms such as fever and headache two days ago. Both members of the couple are currently hospitalized in Victoria, with the infected person being kept in isolation and receiving necessary care. The second person has shown very minor symptoms and has tested negative for the virus.
Dr. Henry stated that it is encouraging that the symptoms were identified early, allowing for supportive care to be provided and close monitoring over the next few days. The patient is reported to be stable, with mild symptoms at this point.
Outbreak Update
The hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius has resulted in three deaths and a total of 12 cases, with nine confirmed so far. If the Canadian patient’s test result is confirmed, they would be the 10th person from the ship to test positive for the virus. Dr. Henry reassured the public that the hantavirus is different from COVID-19 and does not have pandemic potential.
Dr. Henry also emphasized that the situation has not changed for most people in British Columbia, with infection control precautions in place since the passengers arrived. She expressed confidence that there is no additional risk and that they are well-prepared to respond carefully and keep everyone safe.
