State Government Urged to Institute Handloom Awards
The Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare, Satya Kumar Yadav, has written to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, requesting the institution of State-level handloom awards to acknowledge and appreciate the contributions of weavers and artisans in preserving Andhra Pradesh’s rich handloom tradition.
A Symbol of Cultural Identity
According to Mr. Satya Kumar Yadav, the handloom sector is a symbol of the State’s cultural identity, showcasing its artistic excellence and generations-old craftsmanship. He highlighted the significance of renowned weaving clusters such as Dharmavaram, Uppada, and Mangalagiri, which continue to thrive due to the dedication and skill of thousands of artisans.
The Minister noted that while the Union government recognizes outstanding contributions to the handloom sector through National Handloom Awards, several States have established their own State-level awards to promote local talent and excellence in traditional weaving. This, in turn, has fostered innovation, enhanced the dignity of artisans, and inspired younger generations to take up the profession.
Annual State-Level Handloom Awards Proposed
Mr. Satya Kumar Yadav suggested that the State institute annual State-level handloom awards, to be presented on National Handloom Day, observed on August 7. These awards would provide meaningful recognition to deserving weavers, designers, and artisans across the State, strengthening their prospects for national-level honors and other welfare initiatives.
A representation submitted by Padma Shri awardee Gajam Anjaiah and Jinka Ramanjaneyulu, proprietor of J.R. Silk Sarees, Dharmavaram, seeking the institution of State-level Handloom Awards in Andhra Pradesh, was also enclosed with the letter.
