Breaking News: Train Robbery Unravels
A shocking train robbery case has been cracked by the Government Railway Police (GRP) within a span of 24 hours, revealing a cunning modus operandi used by the accused to target unsuspecting passengers.
Investigation and Arrest
The incident occurred on the Nellai Express, which was traveling between Kattankulathur and Potheri, when a woman passenger, Asutha from Thoothukudi, was robbed of her four-sovereign gold chain worth ₹4.75 lakh. The train was forced to slow down due to a covered signal, allowing the accused to strike.
A special team led by Deputy Superintendent Kavinna launched an investigation, examining CCTV footage and inspecting the tracks, which led to the discovery of the obscured signal. The suspect, identified as Kumaresan from Villivakkam, was apprehended by the Tambaram Railway Police.
Modus Operandi and Past Crimes
Investigations revealed that Kumaresan, an autorickshaw driver by day, was a habitual offender with over six robbery cases pending against him. He would cover railway signals with a cloth to slow down or stop trains, making it easier to commit robberies and escape.
- Kumaresan targeted passengers on trains moving at reduced speeds in areas like Basin Bridge, Korukkupet, and Royapuram.
- He had previously been detained under the Goondas Act.
- The accused allegedly admitted to his crimes during questioning.
The GRP has urged passengers to remain vigilant during train journeys and report any suspicious activity or thefts promptly.
Key Facts: The stolen gold chain was recovered from the accused, and Kumaresan was arrested within a day of the complaint being registered. Prompt action by the GRP has brought the culprit to justice, serving as a warning to potential offenders.
