Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a slew of mega projects in West Bengal, marking the state’s ‘Paschimbanga Divas’ (West Bengal Day) and heralding a new era of development. The event, held in Tarakeswar, Hooghly district, saw the PM launch projects linked to railways, agriculture, fisheries, and roads, besides releasing funds for farmers under the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme.
Modi’s Vision for Bengal
Addressing the gathering, Modi asserted that West Bengal has broken free from its shackles, paving the way for a new phase of growth. He congratulated the people on the occasion, saying a new fragrance is wafting through the state, symbolizing the restoration of Bengal’s pride. The PM claimed that the newly elected BJP government has begun working at a rapid pace to undo the damage caused by decades of governance under the Left and the Trinamool Congress.
Undoing Past Wrongs
Modi invoked a Bengali phrase, ‘Poribortonta bhalo lagche’ (the change feels good), crediting voters for ushering in political transformation in the state. He revisited Bengal’s Partition-era history, paying tribute to Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. The PM targeted the Congress, alleging that it had failed to acknowledge Mookerjee’s role in Bengal’s history, and claimed that historical facts surrounding the state’s Partition had been deliberately ignored.
The PM also took a swipe at the Trinamool Congress, saying those who once looted the state are now returning the looted money, and big looters are being sent to jail. He added that the cut-money regime in Bengal has ended, and real work has begun. The PM concluded his speech, saying, ‘Bengal will not stop now; this time Bengal will make history.’
Events and Engagements
Modi is on a two-day visit to the state, during which he will participate in three public programmes, including the International Yoga Day event at the iconic Red Road in Kolkata. He will also commission three indigenously designed and built naval ships at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port.
