Financial Literacy Programme for Farmers
A pioneering financial literacy programme, Dhanapadham, was recently organised by the Department of Banking & Finance Management, College of Co-operation, Banking & Finance Management, Kerala Agricultural University, in collaboration with the Reserve Bank of India and the Lead Bank Office, Canara Bank, Thrissur district.
Objectives and Outcomes
The programme, held at the Green Army Training Centre, Athani, Thrissur, aimed to disseminate financial literacy among farmers, focusing on digital banking, farmer-centred credit schemes, and safe financial practices. As part of the Experiential Learning Programme, final-year B.Sc. (Hons.) Co-operation & Banking students engaged with farmers using Participatory Rural Appraisal techniques to understand their financial awareness, banking practices, and credit requirements.
A key highlight of the programme was a financial literacy skit presented by the students, which demonstrated safe banking practices and highlighted the importance of protecting oneself from emerging digital financial frauds. The programme also provided a platform for nearly 50 farmers from the Mundathikode panchayath to interact with experts and students, strengthening financial literacy among the farming community.
