The Communist Party of India (CPI) has come down heavily on the delimitation process, terming it a political conspiracy aimed at reducing the number of seats for southern states and increasing those for northern states.
CPI State secretary M. Veerapandian made these remarks while inaugurating the party’s nation-wide padyatra and public outreach campaign at Tiruchengode in Namakkal district on Sunday. Veerapandian emphasized that the party is firmly opposed to delimitation and views it as a deliberate attempt to undermine the representation of southern states.
CPI Demands Unity on Key Issues
The CPI has called for unity among political parties on key issues such as the Cauvery dispute and the proposed Mekedatu dam. Veerapandian stressed that these issues are related to Tamil Nadu’s rights and require a collective response. The party has demanded that the court verdict on the Cauvery issue be implemented and that the construction of the Mekedatu dam be halted.
The CPI has also urged the government to conduct an all-party meeting to discuss the Cauvery issue and find a solution that protects the state’s interests.
TVK Government’s First Budget
Veerapandian also shared his views on the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government’s first budget, stating that the new government is facing a financial crisis. He suggested that the government will need to secure loans and that the Union Government should provide financial support to help the state overcome its economic challenges.
The CPI secretary emphasized that it is unrealistic to expect solutions to long-pending problems within a short span of two months. He advocated for the continuation of the past government’s welfare schemes and cautioned against changing project names, stressing that people’s welfare schemes should remain a top priority.
Investments and Development
In response to a question about Tamil Nadu’s slipping ranking in attracting industrial investments, Veerapandian presented a contrarian view. He argued that a country’s development cannot be solely measured by foreign investments, emphasizing that the hard work of labourers and experts is the backbone of any nation’s progress.
