Elgar Parishad Case Takes New Turn
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a plea to cancel the bail of activists Sudha Bharadwaj and Varavara Rao, who are accused in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case, citing a breach of bail conditions. This move comes after the duo allegedly attended an event at the Mumbai Press Club, which the NIA claims is a violation of the conditions set by the court.
Bail Conditions Violated
When granting bail to Bharadwaj and Rao, the court had imposed several conditions, including restrictions on traveling outside of Mumbai without permission and surrendering their passports to the NIA. The court had also barred them from speaking to the media about the case. The NIA alleges that by attending the event at the Mumbai Press Club, the accused have flouted these conditions.
The event in question took place on January 19 this year, and two days later, the Press Club suspended three of its members. The court has now sought a response from the accused and will hear the matter further on May 22.
Background of the Case
The Elgar Parishad case revolves around alleged inflammatory speeches made at a conclave held in Pune on December 31, 2017. The police claimed that these speeches triggered violence the next day near the Koregaon Bhima war memorial. The case was initially investigated by the Pune police, which alleged that the conclave was organized by individuals with Maoist links. The NIA later took over the probe, and over a dozen activists and academicians were arrested. Most of the accused are currently out on bail.
