Heavy Rains Bring India to a Standstill
As the monsoon season intensifies, several parts of India are experiencing heavy rainfall, leading to widespread disruption and chaos. A low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression, putting all Odisha districts on high alert.
Odisha on High Alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the depression could bring heavy showers to the coastal state over the next few days. The system is likely to cross the north Odisha coast between Chandbali and Digha, prompting authorities to issue a high alert.
Mumbai Waterlogged
Mumbai continues to be on red alert, with heavy rains causing severe waterlogging at the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus railway station. The IMD has issued a red alert warning for Mumbai and Thane, with forecasts of moderate to intense spells of rain across these regions.
Other Affected Areas
- Thane: Torrential rains have battered Thane, causing waterlogging, tree falls, and a gallery collapse at a building, injuring two people.
- Pune: A compound wall of a residential society collapsed in Pune, damaging 14 vehicles but thankfully leaving no injuries reported.
- Gujarat: Rain accompanied by thunder and lightning lashed parts of Ahmedabad, bringing relief from the prevailing heat and humidity.
- Rajasthan: Three people were injured in Jaisalmer when hotel rooftop solar panels fell during a storm and heavy rain.
- Uttarakhand: Authorities have urged pilgrims to stay alert amid rain and landslides on the Kedarnath Yatra route.
Railway Ministry Postpones Bullet Train Launch
The Railway Ministry has postponed the formal launch of tunnel-boring work for the bullet train project in Mumbai due to inclement weather, but has ordered authorities to commence the work immediately to avoid project delays.
