India’s Medal Tally Surges Ahead
Indian athletes have been making waves at the Commonwealth Games, with a historic gold medal win in para athletics and multiple medals in weightlifting and other events. Sharmila Dhankar created history by becoming India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games para-athletics gold medallist, winning the women’s shot put F57 title with a season-best effort of 9.81m.
Weightlifting Continues to Bring Home Medals
Weightlifting has been a rich source of medals for India, with 21-year-old Valluri Ajaya Babu clinching silver in the men’s 79kg category and Gyaneshwari Yadav winning silver in the women’s 53kg event. Bindyarani Devi added a bronze medal in the 58kg class, taking India’s weightlifting tally to six medals at the Games.
Other Indian athletes who have made a mark include high jumper Sarvesh Kushare, who became the first Indian to win a silver medal in the men’s high jump at the Games, and boxers Sachin Siwach, Ankush, and Sakshi Chaudhary, who have advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective categories.
Disappointing Outings in Athletics and Swimming
However, not all Indian athletes had a successful day, with national record holder Gurindervir Singh crashing out of the men’s 100m heats and Tejas Shirse finishing last in the men’s 110m hurdles final due to an injury. In swimming, two-time Olympian Sajan Prakash and Aryan Nehra both finished eighth in their respective finals.
