Thoothukudi Corporation’s New Initiative
In a significant move, Thoothukudi Corporation Mayor Jegan Periyasamy has announced that the city will soon have a daily drinking water supply system in place for all its wards, starting from August 15. This decision was made at the Thoothukudi Corporation Council meeting, where the Mayor outlined the corporation’s plans to improve civic amenities.
Desilting Drains and Other Development Works
The Mayor informed that desilting and cleaning of the city’s over 375 drains have already begun and will be completed before the onset of the northeast monsoon to ensure smooth flow of rainwater and prevent waterlogging. Additionally, steps are being taken to replace 547 damaged streetlights and renovate parks across the city.
Currently, 10 wards are receiving 24×7 drinking water supply on a trial basis, and the project will be extended to all wards in phases. The Council also passed 24 resolutions unanimously during the meeting.
Councillors’ Concerns and Corporation’s Response
Councillors raised several issues, including the frequent closure of railway gates, which causes inconvenience to commuters and students. They also sought a uniform drinking water supply across all areas. Responding to these concerns, the Mayor said that the feasibility of constructing a rail overbridge near the first railway gate would be examined, and measures have been initiated to ensure regular drinking water supply to all areas.
