Assam Assembly’s New Term to Commence
The 16th Assam Assembly is set to begin its first session on May 21, as announced by an official notification from the Assam Legislative Assembly Secretariat. The proceedings will take place at the Assembly Chamber in Dispur, starting at 9:30 a.m.
Preparations Underway
In preparation for the session, the governor has issued an order summoning the Assembly to meet on May 21. The seniormost MLA, Chandra Mohan Patowary of the BJP, has been sworn in as the pro-tem Speaker and will administer the oath to newly elected MLAs during the session.
The four-day session, scheduled to conclude on May 26, will include the swearing-in of legislators on the first day, followed by the election of a new Speaker. The NDA has nominated Ranjeet Kumar Dass, a senior BJP legislator and former minister, as its candidate for the Speaker’s post.
- The session will commence with the governor’s address to the House on the first day.
- The BJP, which won 82 seats in the recent Assembly polls, will be joined by its allies AGP and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), which secured 10 seats each.
- The NDA’s retention of power for a third consecutive term, with a two-thirds majority, is expected to shape the state’s legislative agenda.
The Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has outlined the session’s schedule, which will include key events such as the election of the new Speaker and the governor’s address.
