Prime Minister Narendra Modi Touches Down in Amsterdam
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in the Netherlands, marking the second leg of his highly anticipated five-nation tour. The visit is expected to play a pivotal role in deepening bilateral ties between India and the Netherlands, with a strong focus on areas such as trade, technology, defence, and renewable energy.
A Warm Welcome in Amsterdam
Upon his arrival, PM Modi was greeted by Rear Admiral Ludger Brummelaar, Adjutant-General and Chief of the Military Household of His Majesty the King, as well as Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen and India’s Ambassador to the Netherlands Kumar Tuhin. The Prime Minister took to social media to express his enthusiasm for the visit, highlighting the vast potential for cooperation between the two nations.
The visit comes at a time when the India-E.U. Free Trade Agreement has injected new momentum into trade and investment linkages. PM Modi is slated to hold discussions with his Dutch counterpart, Rob Jetten, and will also pay a courtesy call on King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima. Additionally, the Prime Minister will address a community programme, which is expected to be a significant highlight of the visit.
Strengthening India-Netherlands Ties
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the visit presents a valuable opportunity to strengthen the multifaceted India-Netherlands partnership and engage with the largest Indian diaspora on mainland Europe. The MEA has underscored the visit’s rich and substantive agenda, which is expected to consolidate the strategic dimensions of the partnership that have emerged through sustained engagement between the two countries.
- India and the Netherlands have expanded cooperation in recent years beyond traditional sectors such as trade, investment, and priority areas like water, agriculture, and health.
- The partnership has grown in strategic sectors, including technology, innovation, defence, security, semiconductors, renewable energy, education, and the maritime domain.
- The Netherlands is one of India’s largest trade destinations in Europe, with bilateral trade valued at $27.8 billion in 2024-25.
People-to-people ties remain a vital pillar of the bilateral relationship, with the Netherlands being home to over 90,000 non-resident Indians and persons of Indian origin, as well as over 200,000 members of the Suriname-Hindustani community. Around 3,500 Indian students are currently enrolled in Dutch universities, further underscoring the strong people-to-people connect between the two nations.
