Gujarat Sets New Record in Carbon Emissions Reduction
Gujarat has made a significant stride in its mission to reduce carbon footprint, with a remarkable decrease of 49.79 million tonnes in carbon emissions during the 2025-26 financial year. This achievement is attributed to the state’s relentless efforts to promote renewable energy sources, resulting in a record 67,655 million units of electricity generated from solar, wind, and other clean energy projects.
A Five-Year Cumulative Reduction of 179 Million Tonnes
Over the last five years, Gujarat has successfully prevented a cumulative 179 million tonnes of carbon emissions, thanks to its aggressive expansion of renewable energy and implementation of environment-friendly policies. This accomplishment is substantial, considering the state’s annual greenhouse gas emissions, which stand at approximately 442 million tonnes.
The state’s transition towards clean energy has been facilitated by policy measures such as the Integrated RE Policy 2026, the Green Hydrogen Policy, and the Gujarat Pump Storage Policy. Agencies like Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited, Gujarat Energy Development Agency, and Gujarat Power Corporation Limited have played a pivotal role in increasing the share of renewable energy in the state’s power generation mix.
Benefits of Reduced Emissions
The increased reliance on renewable energy has not only reduced dependence on coal and other fossil fuels but also contributed to improved air quality. Furthermore, the decreased emissions will help mitigate the effects of climate change, including extreme heat, erratic rainfall, floods, and droughts.
