Major Infrastructure Development on the Cards for Visakhapatnam
The city of Visakhapatnam is all set to witness a significant transformation in its infrastructure landscape, thanks to the approval of three key projects by the National Apex Committee. These projects, which carry a total price tag of ₹1,501.03 crores, are designed to cater to the city’s future infrastructure needs and will be implemented under the Urban Challenge Fund scheme.
Key Projects Approved
- Development of an Underground Drainage System in the Madhurawada Zone, estimated to cost ₹658.61 crores
- Development of a 24/7 Smart Water Supply System in the Madhurawada Zone, estimated to cost ₹725.18 crores
- Rehabilitation and Modernisation of the Bulk and Semi-Bulk Water Supply System, estimated to cost ₹117.24 crores
According to the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation Commissioner, these projects will play a crucial role in strengthening the city’s drinking water supply, sewerage management, and urban infrastructure. The financial assistance for these projects will be mobilized through international and national financial institutions, including the IFC Term Loan, Canara Bank, and Indian Overseas Bank.
The Urban Challenge Fund scheme is a key initiative of the Central Government, aimed at promoting reforms in Urban Local Bodies, market-based investments, and the development of modern infrastructure. The Commissioner emphasized that the implementation of these projects will provide citizens with better civic infrastructure, uninterrupted drinking water supply, and a modern sewerage management system, while also giving a new direction to the city’s development.
