Telangana Labour Minister G Vivek Venkatswamy stressed the importance of prioritizing safety measures in industries, citing the devastating blast at Sigachi Industries in June 2025 as a stark reminder of the consequences of neglecting safety protocols.
Speaking at a national workshop on process safety, the Minister emphasized that industries must recognize expenditure on safety as a long-term investment, rather than a mere cost. He pointed out that the failure to invest in safety measures can have disastrous consequences, including loss of life and financial losses.
A Strong Safety Culture
Mr. Vivek called for a coordinated effort by the government, industrial managements, and workers to foster a strong safety culture. He underscored the need for strict adherence to safety protocols to eliminate industrial accidents.
The Minister expressed concern over the prevalence of industrial accidents caused by combustible dust explosions and gas leakages, highlighting the need for effective implementation of safety regulations. He emphasized that industries must take greater responsibility for ensuring safety standards, particularly in the context of the Ease of Doing Business framework.
Key measures proposed by the Minister include regular safety training programs, adoption of modern technologies and global best practices, and continuous monitoring of compliance with safety standards. He also directed that contract workers should not be engaged in hazardous operations and instructed the Factories Department to frame regulations to ensure that hazardous operations are handled only by permanent employees.
