Customs Cracks Down on Smuggling Rings
In a massive operation, the Customs department has seized a staggering 8 kg of gold, valued at over ₹11 crore, from airports in Kerala within the span of just one week. This significant haul was made possible through 14 separate cases, highlighting the increasing sophistication of international smuggling networks.
Arrests and Seizures
Nine individuals, including six from Kerala and three from Tamil Nadu, have been apprehended in connection with these cases. The seizures are a testament to the Customs department’s vigilance and collaboration with other agencies, including the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and the Kerala Police.
The methods used by smugglers to evade detection are becoming increasingly complex. Gold is being converted into paste or compound form and then concealed in unconventional locations, such as inside specially tailored clothing, body cavities, and even aircraft seats. This level of sophistication underscores the organized nature of these smuggling operations.
Rise in Smuggling Attempts
Customs sources indicate that the majority of these cases involve passengers arriving from Gulf countries. A recent 10% hike in import duty is believed to have contributed to the surge in smuggling attempts. As the cost of importing gold legally increases, the incentive for smugglers to find alternative, illegal methods also rises.
In addition to gold, Customs officials have also seized foreign currency worth over ₹3 crore that was being illegally transported out of the country through Kerala’s airports. This illegal outflow of currency is likely linked to the purchase of gold abroad, further complicating the smuggling landscape.
